Dr.P.P.Balaram is not a sweeper. Yet this homoeo doctor has taken upon himself the task of cleaning the Thottada town everyday. The sight of the well-dressed doctor, removing the waste and sweeping the town every morning, is not a surprising sight for the people of the area.
1 year ago, the when the waste bin kept by the panchayat in the town started overflowing and giving out foul smell, people started closing their noses and moving away. Noticing this, Dr. Balaram cleaned the waste that night itself. Since then he has been at the task of cleaning the town everyday. The many discouraging faces have not dampened his enthusiasm.
He segregages the waste and burns it. The ash from the process is used as fertilizer in the compound of neighbours. For this Dr.Balaram has himself planted banana, tapioca and vegetables in these farms.
Dr.Balaram, who retired as Health Supervisor from the Community Health Centre, Pinarayi, has been practicing as a homoeo doctor since then. His consultation is entirely free. He charges the patients only the cost of medicines.
Dr.Balaram lives in Thottada with his wife Jayasree, children and grandchildren. His daughter Sreeja is Health Inspector at P.H.C, Dharmadam and his son is an engineer in Bangalore.
