T.P.PRAKASAN: MATHS TEACHER WITH A LEARNER-CENTRIC APPROACH | |||||||
|
Before Maths teacher T.P.Prakasan joined Government Higher Secondary School, Vazhakkad, the subject was a conundrum for a good number of its students. But thanks to the teaching of Prakasan, the school has gone on from strength to strength in the last 7 years. In the Maths Mela held during the last 5 years, the school has bagged one of the first 3 prizes at the State level. In the South Indian Science Mela held at Kozhikode in 2004, the project guided by him had won the first prize. When Prakasan joined the school in 1998, the pass in SSLC was just 30%. By 2005 it had rose to 80%, thanks in large measure to the efforts of Prakasan. A member of various committees in charge of textbook and question paper preparation, he had prepared the maths workbook for this year and given 10 days training to maths teachers of Malappuram Revenue District. His day starts at 4am and he leaves for school from his home at Cheruvannoor by 5.30am. At school, the students are grouped based on their board exams and those who need extra coaching are provided that. Then there are weekly meetings of the Maths Club. He is in the process of bringing out a book on number system for students and teachers. Prakasan’s wife Pushpa is a teacher in L.P.School, Perambra. Their son is Aswin.
