The smile of Vinod Kumar must be brighter than all the CFL lamps in his house.  For this youngster of SSLC qualification has used waste materials to generate electricity for home use when KSEB’s rules stalled an electric connection for his family.

For a brief while after finishing 10th standard, Vinod had been an employee in a workshop.  It was his observation of the working of the generator then that gave him the confidence to bring light into his home.

The main part of his generator is an old moped engine which he bought from a scrap store.  Another component was the dynamo which he obtained from an old jeep.  A step-up transformer and starter form the other major items.  Petrol, used as fuel, is stored in a 4” PVC pipe capped at both ends.  Soap dish is used for air filter and waste pipe from wash basin ends up as pipe leading to the air filter.  The Rs.2000 generator is bolted to the work area of his home.

When engine is started, current is produced by the dynamo, which is stepped up by the transformer.  Although Vinod’s generator produces 200W power, he uses just 50W to burn CFL lamps in all the rooms.

He is confident of producing even 1000W from the device, if proper step-up transformer is deployed. However, at the moment the biggest challenge that he faces is for money.  Despite the challenge, he dreams of developing a kerosene-driven generator and another one that could run on LPG.

In any case, the faces of Vinod parents lit up by the fact that CFL lamps are burning in all the rooms of their house.
