MARTHANDAVARMA RAJA: CONVERTING PLASTIC CARRY-BAG WASTE INTO ROPES | |||||||
|
If others are on the lookout to end or reduce the plastic menace, A.C.Marthandavarma Raja is on the lookout to collect such waste bags and convert them into plastic ropes: sturdy and aesthetic. The incidental cause of A.C.Marthandavarma Raja’s invention was the requirement of a rope by his daughter-in-law to tie the cloth line. And this need took him to plastic carry bags which ultimately ended up as raw material for his rope. From the thinnest black carry bags to its better varieties, all can be used for rope making. His rope trick essentially consists of the following steps: the bags are cut into strips and rolled; the rolls are braided. Using overlap, the rolls are jointed and by using different coloured strips, many effects are achieved. 63-year-old Raja is a retired Villageman. His displays of these products at many exhibitions in Palakkad have evoked good response from buyers. The products are priced between Rs 2.50 – Rs.7.00 per metre.
