REMYA JOSE: TEENAGER DEVELOPS PEDALING WASHING MACHINE | |||||||
|
Shed a kilo or two; wash a kilo or three! The washing machine developed by teenager Remya Jose.P is capable of washing upto 3 kg of cloths at a go and doubles up as an ‘excer-cycle’ capable of making sedate housewives shed a kilo or two of fat. Her device consists essentially of 3 parts. A cubical metallic box that can hold about 45 litres of water, a drum made of wiremesh that rotates inside the cubicle, and a pair of pedals outside the box to rotate the drum. Open the lid of the cubicle, fill it with water and add soap powder. Open the drum and put cloths into it. Now all that is required is to pedal the device, which can be done sitting on a chair or rotating it with hands. 3 to 5 minutes of effort after a brief soaking cycle, and the cloths are devoid of dirt. Necessity is the mother of invention. But in the case of Remya it was her father who was instrumental in prodding her engineering brain. He had refused to entertain the request of the Plus Two student to buy her a washing machine. As a sweet revenge, Remya developed the Rs.2000 device. Thus, before becoming successful in the Engineering Entrance Exam, she had developed a useful product. Besides solving her personal need, the effort won her a National Innovation award also.
