U.B.MAYA: SCHOOLGIRL’S TRAVELOGUE FEATURED IN TEXTBOOK | |||||||
|
If U.B.Abhishek, a 6th standard student of Pavandoor Higher Secondary School in Kozhikode District is excited about the lesson ‘Yatrayile Kazhchakal’, the reason for it lies outside the textbook. For the lesson has been penned by none other than his elder sister U.B.Maya, a 9th standard student. Fascinated by her father’s account of Velliyot U.P.School in Nadapuram, where he was a teacher, Maya set out on a journey with her father to the school. She wrote about it in ‘Ureka’ a children’s magazine brought out by Kerala Sastra Sahitya Parishad, in January 2004. The State Council of Educational Research and Training, while changing the textbook for Standard 6 this year, included it as a lesson in the Malayalam text book. “I was excited by the scenes that I saw from the bus. I was also interested in the language of tribals who live near the school,” says Maya with rustic charm. “I still cannot believe that my travelogue is a lesson,” she says. An avid reader of Sherlock Home books, she wants to become a detective when grown up. Her father, C.K.Bhaskaran is a retired schoolteacher. Her mother, K.Urmila, is a housewife. The Pavandoor school held a meeting to felicitate her. Headmaster K.Rajendran said it was a rare honour for the school.
