For 40 years continuously, this Hindu woman has been offering ‘Sakkath’ during Ramzan.  87-year-old Malukkutti Amma of Radha Vilasom, Edakkara, Nilambur, Malappuram does not disappoint anyone who comes to her doorstep during the holy month.  And when the Rudraksham-wearing Malukkutti Amma offers ‘Sakkath’, the poor of the area accept it with deep gratitude.

If the charity began with 25 paise in the beginning, it gradually rose and now she is able to offer Rs.10 each to adults.  “All the wherewithal you see around me have been provided by God since I help the poor”, says this old lady.

It was 43 years ago that her husband Koru and she started the Radhavilasom Hotel.  Nobody had to go empty-stomach from the hotel for want of money, she remembers.  Her kitchen is ever ready to feed the mentally-unsound and hungry uninvited ‘guests’, who often shower abuse after taking the meal.  To that her standard response is a smile.

There is a saying among the local people that Malukkutty Amma does not lock her cash chest lest she be delayed in spontaneous charity.  For the last 31 years she has been a regular visitor at the Sabarimal temple.   She has special enthusiasm to arrange hospitality free of cost to devotees of Lord Ayyappa from neighbouring States.

Even at this age, she does not like to sit idle.  She comes often to assist his son Vijayan in running the hotel.  If customers start arguing about religions, she gets irritated.  “Doesn’t all religions teach about human kindness,” she would then ask.

She also does free distribution of rice during Onam
