By developing 2 varieties of pepper with better yield and resistance, Balakrishnan, an ordinary farmer of Kammanam, Mananthavady, Wayanad, is gaining attention of those involved in the field. Besides, he has been successful in experiments on budding in coffee and pepper.
The 2 varieties had been developed after 5 years of experiments. Similarly, he had successfully tried budding on pepper. This too had produced better yielding variety. Likewise, his attempt to bud robusta variety of coffee too has been satisfactory, according to him.
For his effort in the R&D area, he has been honoured by the Research Station at Ambalavayal in 2000. In 1992, Edavaka Panchayat and Krishi Bhavan jointly honoured him with a shawl.
