REGI: INNOVATIVE HANDPUMP THAT NEEDS NO ELECTRICITY OR FUEL | |||||||
|
From 20m below, Regi’s pump will draw water. And deliver it to a point 200m above. All without using electricity or any other fuel. Regi’s piston pump, which he invented to take care of his drinking water needs, is now installed in more than 400 places in Idukki. The pump designed by plumber Regi with the help of his neighbour Ouseph draws on rudimentary knowledge and is built using locally available materials. The pump consists of a ‘cylinder’, which is a 1-inch GI pipe whose inside is bored to a smooth surface in a lathe. The piston consisting of a ¾-inch GI pipe with washer is inserted into the cylinder. Using a suitable handle, the pump is fixed near the source of water. Suction and delivery hoses and 2 non-return valves, one on each side as well as a footvalve complete the other parts of the pump. As the piston is drawn up, vacuum is created inside the cylinder and water from the source rushes into it. At the time of downward thrust, the water in the cylinder rushes into the delivery hose as the non-return valve on the suction side is closed and that on the delivery side is opened. Each stroke of the pump repeats this process. Although Regi invented the Rs.2000 device to avoid the difficulty of bringing drinking water through slippery and sloppy village paths, the pump is used by many others to irrigate the farm without electricity and to deliver water to the overhead tank when power supply is not available. A plumber with formal education up to Plus 2, Regi is the winner of National Innovation Foundation award.
