AUGUSTINE: DEVELOPING A MACHINE TO SLICE BANANA CHIPS | |||||||
|
Need to slice 2600 banana chips per minute? School teacher Augustine’s indigenous machine can do this for you. The main parts of his slicer consists of 6 oval-shaped cups to hold bananas vertically, holds to clasp them from above, layer of blades at the bottom and a low power motor that rotates the blades. The cups have spring operated plates to hold the bananas tightly. When the motor rotates, the bananas are sliced to the correct thickness. There is provision to either deliver the banana slices directly into the frying pan or store it elsewhere. Provision has also been made for wiping the blade periodically to remove stains Born in an agricultural family, Augustine took up the profession of teaching considering the money and facilities available for his inventions. His 1st creation was a tapioca slicer, which did not have any demand in the market. The 2nd invention is the banana slicer. There is demand too for the product. And hence he is in the process of refining it further. According to him, the cost of prototype has so far come to Rs. 7000. However, he is confident that it can be produced commercially for Rs.5000 each.
