KAIMOOTTIL GOPALAN: UTILIZING PENSION FOR PHILANTHROPIC EFFORTS | |||||||
|
Someone who practices the dictum that service to man is service to God is ex-serviceman Kaimoottil Gopalan, who utilizes a major part of his pension to help distressed patients and victims of calamities. 74-year-old Gopalan’s attitude to life changed after he met Gangadharan, a visually challenged person during one of his journeys. Now he sends Rs.200 each to more than 20 persons including Gangadharan every month. The amount is deposited in separate bank accounts. In addition, he helps - to the extend possible – those who appeal for assistance through newspapers. Gopalan, who retired from the Army in 1972, had a deprived childhood. Perhaps, those circumstances have made him more receptive to the concerns of similar individuals. A native of Elanthur, Pathanamthitta, Gopalan had contributed Rs.1.96 lakhs towards the construction of the Bhagavathi temple there. Though he spends most part of his pension on philanthropic efforts, his wife Bhavani Amma or sons Vasudevan and Asokan or daughter Thankamani have no resentment about it. He is at present staying with his younger son at Kanjirampara, Thiruvananthapuram.
