It was after plague ravaged Surat in Gujarat that the municipal authorities realized the need to put in place an environmentally sound waste disposal system.  And their search finally zeroed in on Malayali Nandakumar, who has helped the Corporation not only get rid of the waste but also generates electricity in the bargain.

Nandakumar, who runs ‘Chemtrols’, a noted company in Chemical Engineering, created a subsidiary called ‘Envirex’ for the purpose.  It collects 250 tons of municipal waste per month and produces 3500-4500 units of electricity by converting it into biogas.  Thus the Corporation benefits twice, once by the disposal of waste and next, by generating electricity worth Rs.3½ lakhs.

‘Envirex’ does similar job in Vasco and is planning to replicate its success in Vadodara.

In Vasco, Goa, the daily waste of 55 tons is used to generate electricity and organic fertilizer.  Nandakumar, a chemical engineer, is of the opinion that such models could easily be tried in many towns of Kerala.
