SHIGIL: MAKING COCONUT HUSK CARVINGS USING SIMPLE PEN KNIFE | |||||||
|
Using common pen knife and still more common husk of coconut, a young man from Theruvath Kadavu, Kozhikkode has been making exquisite and affordable artifacts. Shigil, 24, has been making these figures since his childhood. He has said that the medium or the implements were never a hindrance to express in husk what he sees with the inner eye. His figures have good demand in the market. It is notable that those who used to buy costly wooden carvings can easily afford to buy his creations for a fraction of that cost, in the range of Rs.10 to 100. He insists that this simple technique can be tried by anyone with a sense of patience. And if it is marketed well, then husk carving can be an income generating scheme. He is in the process of converting his hobby into a profession and looks forward to contacting like-minded persons.
