SARASA: HOUSEWIFE WHO TEACHES AT GOVERNMENT SCHOOL FREE OF COST | |||||||
|
She is not a teacher of Govt.L.P.School, Vellannoor, Kunnamangalam, Kozhikkode. Yet the young students call her ‘teacher’ and eagerly await her arrival everyday. P.K.Sarasa is a housewife living nearby, yet for the last 3 years she comes to the school almost everyday, involving herself with the academic and extra-curricular activities of the 4-classroom school though she gets no remuneration for the effort. It was the love of children and the passion for teaching that led Sarasa to serve the students. She first entered the scene in 1996 as a parent, when there was insufficiency of teachers. A graduate in Malayalam, it was not long before she became the key resource person of the school. She was influenced a lot by the new style of teaching / learning propounded in the DPEP project. She was a member of the School Support Group that was formed as part of that project. However, her service to the school had started long before that. Sarasa’s husband V.T.Ramesh is a teacher in another school. Sarasa lists the support of her husband, teachers and parents for the success of her interventions. According to headmaster K.Ramachandran, it is Sarasa who clears the doubts of regular teachers regarding the new methodology of teaching.
