His is the joyous story of a young man who dreamt of selling clove sapling but failed, and yet who later won in life when the saplings which he was forced to plant in his own farm, started yielding good returns.  Joy of Vilangad, Kozhikode was forced to take up the farmers’ implements after the untimely death of his father.  As his pepper crop failed, he was forced to think of a means to bring up his younger brothers and to run the family.  He then made 750 clove saplings obtained from the two clove trees planted by his father.  But nobody came up the Palur hill to buy those saplings.

Dejected, he planted them in his own coconut farm as a mixed crop.  Years down the lane, these cloves are a major income-earner for Joy and his family.  Without much care, the 300 odd clove trees provide him an average of 4 kg each, which fetch not a bad sum in the market.

His method of plucking cloves from tall trees is also interesting.  A 20-feet bamboo is needled and wooden steps are inserted in it.  The ladder is made stable by anchoring it on both sides with ropes.  This helps him to pluck the produce from even the tallest trees without the fear of falling or the branch breaking.

Joy’s innovations do not end there.  Electricity is another item that he produces in his farm.  Earlier, he used to bring water for irrigation from a distance of 500 m.  After coming to know about a small stream-driven micro- generation unit in Koodaranji, he went there to learn the same and implement it in his farm.  For the last 10 years, the TV, mixie, fan and bulbs in his house run on this home-made power.

Joy who has been selected as the best mixed crop farmer of Vanimel Panchayat, cultivates vegetables for his domestic use.  His wife Elikkutty is active in assisting him while children Emil, Ebin and Jerril are students.
