For
the students of Nirmala High School, Kabanigiri ‘study’ includes
attempts to know the place where one lives. Accordingly, 5 students of 9th
standard made a study of the water sources of the area and its
utilization, that was accepted as one of the excellent projects at the
12th National Children’s Science Congress held at Guwahati, Assam
recently.
The team with members Lineesh Thomas, K.V.Vipin, Arun Joshi and Merlyn
Mathew were led by the team leader Binvi Molly Tom and guided by faculty
members, M.Tomy and V.Madhavan.
As part of the study, the students identified and studied the water
sources, measured rainfall and river flow and conducted a survey in the
200 household of Padichira watershed. Undaunted by the absence of regular
rain gauges, they made use of old and cut-open paint tins.
Their study revealed that most of the water sources of Mullankolli
Panchayat had dried up. The study also documented the other pertinent
points like sand mining in Kabani river, availability of water for farmers
of the area, newly constructed wells, reduction in paddy cultivation,
construction of rain pits, installation of water harvesting structures
etc.
