Some ride the straight road to success, while in the case of many others, fate plays a jigsaw puzzle before the pieces form into a picture.  Madhu.K.G, who resigned his secure job as Technical Assistant in VSSC to start a CFL bulbs manufacturing and marketing unit in a rented room belongs to the 2nd category.  His effort bore fruit and Omega, his company, later turned to the unconventional field of solar lanterns and has been a success since.

As a student in a rural school in Palakkad, he had fabricated a musical bell and a radio, based on the information he gathered from a local library.  Observing his inclination and talent, his uncle encouraged him to take up the study of electronics.

After much effort, he joined electronics diploma course at SSM Polytechnic, Tirur.  Later he worked for sometime in the departmental store run by his uncle. This experience enabled him to understand the psychology of customers.

Madhu then joined Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi as nuclear science technician.  At the same time he did his graduation in engineering.  In 1988 he joined VSSC.  His years in the organization molded him to look at everything with a professional approach

Back in Thiruvananthapuram, he started manufacturing CFL lamps in a rented room in Sasthamangalam.  It was at this time that he thought of solar lanterns.  In 1995 he resigned form VSSC despite stiff opposition from his family and relatives.  But by 1997, the company was on the growth trajectory as he started a solar power unit at Industrial Estate.

Today the company and its sister concerns manufacture solar street lighting system, solar charge controller, solar home lighting system, solar generator etc. with an annual turnover of Rs.15 crores.

Some of the honours that have come his way include Central Government award for best entrepreneur in 2000, similar award from State Government in 1999 etc.
