According to the current capabilities of the finger print retrieving system, impressions that are older than a few weeks or those that are on oily or colourful surfaces are difficult to determine.  Dr. Dinesh, a Malayalee researcher at Nan Yang Technical University of Singapore has devised laser based ‘Phase Resolved Optical Technique’ that is capable of overcoming these difficulties and resolving finger prints upto 3 years old.

Son of retired Livestock Inspector Unni Madhava Kurup and Soudamini of Karumba, Nanmanda, Kozhikode, Dr.Dinesh took up the doctoral work at Singapore after completing his Post Graduation in Laser Physics at CUSAT with 1st rank.  He chose finger printing using laser as his doctoral topic.  Police Department of Singapore funded the study and within 2 years the new technique was developed.

According to the Head of Forensic Wing at Singapore’s Criminal Investigation Department, the experiments with the new technique have given "excellent" results.  However, Dr.Dinesh cautions that the technique is in its infancy and will need the refinement of a few years.

The technique relies on applying laser at the surface containing the finger print and analyzing the frequency of the reflected beam.  According to him, the technique could have application in differentiating cancer cells from normal ones.

The main limitation of the technique is the equipment needed to produce the special laser beam.  The technique has been patented in Singapore.  The University has entered into preliminary agreement with a British Company for the commercial development of the technique.
