RAVEENDRAN: FROM A LABOURER TO THE HELM OF MULTI-CRORE BUSINESS | |||||||
|
Scene1:
a poor student - whose mother could ill-afford to feed even porridge to
her 5 children - is beaten by a teacher in the class for not bringing text
book. Stung by the insult and the hunger, the student raises his hands
against the teacher. The result: end of education for Raveendran,
the 6th standard student. Scene 2: After trying his hand as a daily labourer, he tries weaving as a means of earning a livelihood. Using available wood in the house, the family creates a ‘workplace’ for weaving. Soon Raveendran is a trusted source of thread for the textile exporters of Kannur. Scene 3: With the help of some benefactors, he sells threads to companies in Chennai, without going through middlemen. He collects the address of some foreign companies and corresponds with them with the help of an instructor in a typewriting institute. And lo, a Japanese company places a US$ 16000 order for his goods. Scene 4: As orders from abroad pour in, Raveendran decides to learn English. He searches for the same teacher who had once ended his academic pursuits. By undergoing tuition at the residence of the teacher for almost 4 hours a day for 7 years, he grasps the essence of not only English, but other subjects as well. Today, as the head of the Rs.35 crore turnover business, he dreams of even bigger projects. His Asoka Fashion Handlooms at Kannur employs 750 persons directly and 2000 on contract basis. At his Metro Pacific Apparels, Bangalore, more than 1600 people find employment. The Indian Textile Export Promotion Council had selected him for the Appreciation Award in 2005. 41-year-old V.Raveendren is the treasurer of Solace Old Age Home in Kannur.
