Perhaps there is scope for improving the method of making vermin-compost in tanks, thought P.P.Sunil Kumar of Cherupparambu, Panoor, Kannur.  He was especially concerned with the cost-efficiency of the system.  And by applying his mind, this small time farmer has come up with the alternative that suits his budget.

In his method, a wire rope or plastic coir is tied between 2 trees.  Apply grease at both ends of the rope to discourage ants, termites and other pests.  Hook woven plastic bags with good air circulation on to the wire rope and fill them with waste.  Place 100 to 200 earth worms on top of the waste and top it up with cowdung slurry. Care should be taken to see that the bags do not touch the ground.  Keep the bags moist once in 5 days and after about 1 or 2 months the compost is ready.

The major advantage is saving on construction of tank, which is the traditional method.  Inside the tank, the heat generated from the waste material could lead to the death of the worms.  Besides, the heat may prompt them to migrate from the tank.  In the woven plastic bag, air circulation prevents build up of heat.  There is less scope of attack by ants, rats etc.

Another advantage is in decanting the vermi-wash.  Pour water from the top of the bag and one can collect the wash from the bottom of the bag.  This is an excellent manure for plants.
