The majority of 250 odd students at the Boys High School, Karamana, Thiruvananthapuram come from underprivileged families and at least some of them consider the lunch served there as important as the lessons taught.  Yet 3 students and their science teacher from this school have overcome big odds to win laurels at the State science fair held recently.  They will now represent the State at the Southern India science fair scheduled at Secunderabad from January 18, 2005 onwards.

While S.V.Vinod Kumar won in the individual category, V.Sreekumar and S.Syamkumar won in the general category. All the 3 are from Standard 9A of the school where their science teacher M.Seleen extends all support to them.

Vinod chose as topic of his study, the pollution of Karamana river and the consequent effect on the health of adjacent population.  The group project attempted to look at the economics of cultivating tuber crops to augment the income of debt-trapped farmers.

And their teacher’s topic of study was about the role of teachers in preventing bad habits among students.
