VARUNNI: PATENT FOR DEVELOPING AUTOMATIC GEAR FOR 2 AND 3 WHEELERS | |||||||
|
69-year-old K.U.Varunni of Kodankandath, Manaloor, Pavaratti, has so far developed 40 odd machines for different companies. Perhaps it is then no wonder that he has hit upon the Continuous Infinitely Variable Transmission (CIVT) System for incrementally varying the gear of 2 or 3 wheelers. His epicyclic gear changes automatically according to the load on the engine. When the break is applied, the gear downs and when starting, it changes from neutral to upwards continuously. According to him, even in steep slopes, his device works without any hitch. There is a ‘hillholding’ mechanism to ease the starting of the vehicle that had been brought to rest on a slope. Another advantage of the device is better efficiency and less wear and tear of the engine. After developing the device, he had applied for patent 2 years ago at the office of the Patent and Design Controller, Chennai. The other day he received communication accepting his innovation and granting him patent rights. Varunni, who had retired as General Manager from G.C.T, Baroda, had earlier obtained patent for developing CVT system for 2-wheelers. He had also received 2 national awards for innovations in the engineering field.
