P.V.JOHN: FROM A LABOURER TO A SUCCESSFUL CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT | |||||||
|
“Let my travails be known to all, so that others can find hope from it,” says P.V.John, who began his career as a labourer after his 10th standard and is now Accounts Member of Kerala Agricultural Income Tax and Sales Tax Appellate Tribunal with a string of academic qualifications including Cost Accountancy, Chartered Accountancy, MBA, LLB and MCA.. Son of a daily labourer with 7 children, John’s constant companion in his childhood was poverty. By the time he reached 5th standard, his mother died. After passing SSLC, he felt that it would have been better to fail. For there was no way he could find money for his education. By working as a labourer along with his father, and by giving tuition to more affordable children in the neighbourhood, he managed to enroll in the college after a gap of one year. And considering the monetary position, he had to be content with the choice of Commerce group for his studies. By the time he completed his graduation, his father too left this world. After B.Com, someone advised him that Chartered Accountants could easily get jobs. So after much search and many disappointments, he approached Venugopal C.Govind of Varma and Varma, who gave him a chance to do internship in the firm. By now he was selected for the post of village officer by the PSC. Though everyone advised him to accept the government job, John hesitated. Venugopal’s advice was to forget about the job if he wanted to be a Chartered Accountant. He took the advice of his mentor. After successfully completing the C.A. Final, John became Assistant Accounts Officer in Marketfed. From there he moved on to Civil Supplies Corporation and then got elevated as Finance Director and Company Secretary in Kerala Electrical and Allied Engineering Company. Since the last 6 years, 48-year-old John is the Accounts Member of the Tribunal. He always remembers with gratitude Sumathi, his high school teacher, who used to help him with food and other necessities and Venugopal C.Govind for guiding him to take the right choice in life. Nor does he forget the Grace of God that saved him from death or debilitation as he fell from the coconut tree in his Pre Degree days.
