His legs may not respond to his commands, but the effort of his hands on the wood is noteworthy.  Vinod of Viswa Sadanam, Pallikkara, EMS Road, Vizhinjam, Thiruvananthapuram is wheelchair-borne owing to polio.  But his talent in carving sees him make impressive figures in wood.

Son of retired police head constable Viswambharan, 27-year-old Vinod was a normal child till he was 4.  The attack of polio saw him bedridden for 1½ years.  Later the parents took him to different systems of medicine in various parts of the country, but to no avail.

After resigning to his fate, Vinod learned up to 10th standard.  In his spare time he used to dabble in pencil drawing.  On seeing his beautiful drawing, a friend, Unni advised him to learn sculpture.

Thus he joined a private institute at Russel Puram and learned the art of wood carving.  After graduating from there at the end of 5 years, Vinod soon showed his showed his talent.  For the last few years, his studio is his home itself.  As people came to know of his talent, the orders for sculptures too started coming in.

His works have reached even Goa and Maldives.  A devotee of Lord Shiva, his desire is to complete a sculpture of Nataraja, besides starting an exhibition stall of his own.

Apart from his parents, Viswambharan and Visalakshi, his brothers Aji Kumar and Anil Kumar as well as sister Sheeba lend him necessary support in his endeavours.
