It is not only maneuvering autorickshaw through the roads of Kondotty that comes effortlessly to K.P.Safiya.  When the occasion came she revealed her presence of mind and courage by descending into a well to rescue a neighbour.

33-year-old Safiya was getting ready to proceed to the town in her auto when she heard the distress call of neighbours alerting that another neighbour Khadija had slipped into the unfenced well in front of her house.  She immediately rushed to the scene in her night dress with a rope.  The 10m deep well with less than 2m diameter had its bottom enveloped in darkness.  So, although many had gathered around the well by that time, none, including men, were sure what to do next.

At that time, without any hesitation, and without losing time, Safiya tied the rope to a nearby tree and descended into the well that had no steps.  As summer had almost dried up the well, Khadija had fallen on the rock at the bottom and broken her bone.  She was made to sit in a chair that was lowered for the rescue act.  In the meanwhile, a few others also ventured to descend down the well.  They then transported the victim by the ropeway.

A big crowd that had gathered by then witnessed with appreciation, the ascent of Safiya.  After changing her dress, she proceeded to the hospital with relatives.  At the hospital, the victim and rescuer met and shed tears of gratitude and relief.

Wife of Adampulan Moinkutty, Safiya is the only woman autorickshaw driver in Kondotty since 1999.
