BALACHANDRA MENON: POLICE CONSTABLE WITH A PENCHANT FOR HELPING OTHERS | |||||||

While policemen more often send suspicious looking persons to the lock up, Balachandra Menon, a Head Constable with the Railway Police at Thiruvananthapuram checks to see if they are fit case for orphanages and rehabilitation centres. And in case he finds them so, he makes efforts to help them reach such havens, often spending money from his own pocket in the process. Last week he had entrusted 9-year-old run away girl Naseerara Banu to ‘Athani’ at Vanchiyoor. Last Monday, he had got Lakshmi, a 70-year-old woman who was lying in a corner of the railway station in the rains admitted to the General Hospital. While on night duty he had seen a tired-looking old man. After buying him dinner, he waited for the end of his duty next morning. Immediately afterwards, he hired an auto and took him to different rehabilitation centres. Finally, with the help of Child Line, he could find him accommodation at Santhi Mandiram at Nedumangad. Balachandra Menon, who provides silent humanitarian help, goes on with his work.
