GEORGE: STARTING A LEADING NATIONAL STOCK BROKERING FIRM | |||||||
|
Chief
of one of the top 5 brokering companies in India, C.J.George of
Geogit Financial Services does not indulge in share transactions. Nor do
the senior executives of the firm. This kind of ethic, followed by
hardwork, is what he attributes to the success of his 800-staff
organisation, which has been a torch bearer in most of the recent changes
in the share market.
Starting as a partnership in a car shed in Ravipuram, Ernakulam in 1987, the firm had a modest beginning. After George bought all rights from his partner in 1993, things started gathering momentum. Starting with the first branches at Thrissur and Muvattupuzha in 1994, the firm became a member of National Stock Exchange the next year. The same year, Geogit's public issue for Rs.3 crores was over subscribed by 15 times. After becoming a member of the Bombay Stock Exchange in 1999, the company gave out dividend in the ratio of 1:1 in 2000 and has since then been declaring dividend every year. Today it is brokering firm with the maximum number of branches in India. The other milestones of the company include the first internet trading in India in 2000, the only Indian brokering firm in Middle East etc. Starting with future trading in rubber, the firm took up the online trading of wheat and rice. The latter activity was switched on by the then Prime Minister A.B.Vajpaye from his residence on December 13, 2003. Be it dematerialisation or trade in derivatives or future trading of commodities, the firm has been in the forefront. Besides, the credit for bringing discipline and ethics to the brokering field belongs to the firm. Geoge, who studied in Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha, later did his M.Com from Delhi University. He dropped out of a law course to join Batliwala &Co, the then brokering giant. It was a short stint here that prepared him to launch a firm of his own. His wife Shiny is a lecturer in statistics at Mar Athanacious College, Kothamangalam. Children: Johns and Jyothis.
