BHAVANI AMMA: BECOMING A MOTHER AT THE AGE OF 62 | |||||||
|
At
the age of 62, when most women are grandmothers, she has become a mother.
The saga of Bhavaniamma of Moovattupuzha is a story of triumph of
will over body.
If the 1st man she wed could not give her a child and died of cancer after an unsuccessful surgery for fertility, her second marriage did not fare better either. When she realised that they weren't destined to sire a child, she herself asked him to marry again. However, her plea that he shouldn't abandon her and should allow her to just have a glimpse of his child weren't adhered to. As years rolled by, Bhavaniamma became Headmistress and later retired from service. An aura of worthlessness and loneliness soon enveloped her. It was at this juncture that she visited Puttaparthy and worked as a volunteer in the post-natal ward of the hospital there. She had the occasion to whisper the Lord's name into the ears of the just-born babies. Again 2 years passed, when she saw a newspapaer story about 56-year-old Blossom giving birth to a child. If Blossom can do it, why can't I, she thought. She convinced Dr. Sathi Pillai and her team at the Samad Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram that becoming a mother is the ambition of her life. The doctors then subjected her to hormone treatment. After the seed formed by IVF method was planted in her body, she was assailed by a wave of illnesses, that forced the doctors to go for surgical intervention, 6 weeks before the scheduled date. Waiving off anaesthesia, she waited to receive the child after instructing that the Lord's mantra be whispered thrice into the infant's ear immediately on birth. In that meditative atmosphere, Dr.Sathi Pillai and her team let infant Kannan enter the world. And in the flood of tears of joy, Bhavaniamma had no time to realise that she was the 3rd reported case of a women over 60 giving birth to a child in the world.
