THOMAS BABY: SELECTION FOR INTERNATIONAL MENTAL ABILITY CONTEST | |||||||
|
Thomas
Baby's mental calculations do not go wrong. Be it multiplying 144 by
144 or 2 multiplied by itself 64 times, he can give the answer in a jiffy.
Not surprising then that this 20-year-old student of St. Thomas College,
Kozhenchery has been chosen to take part in the World Mental Ability
Contest being organised in Germany.
The contest, organised in memory of German mathematician Adam Rice, will be held during October 29-31, 2004 and Baby, a 3rd year student of mathematics, who has already demonstrated his talents during more than 100 performances, is ready to take up the challenge. Son of a farm labourer, Baby has the calendar of 12000 years at the tip of his tongue. Days and dates of the past or future are child's play for him. Another talent is his ability to remember and reproduce in any order, random numbers up to 175 digits. Stars of the Indian calendar are also familiar to him and he can reel of these positions for any date of 2003 and 2004. However, it is another calculation that is taxing him now. For taking part in the competition, at least Rs.1 lakh will be needed. Baby is going ahead with the travel plans, although the financial condition isn't all that bright.
