In 1991, a young civil engineer took over the reins of a 10-worker strong polythene company in his native place Tholikode in Kollam. Today the 100-worker strong company works in 3 shifts and the workers practice yoga and meditation for half an hour before entering the production floor. "As everyone works for the development of the organisation, there is no difference of owner and worker in the company," says B.Sudheer Kumar, Managing Director, spelling out his practical wisdom.

Sudheer, who had dreamt of becoming an architect, was however, destined to shape PVC pipes. The company he took over in order to bail out a Kerala Financial Corporation defaulter, started focusing on the Rigid PVC Pipe market, catering to electrical wiring. By producing the 1st BIS certified PVC pipes in Kerala under the brand name 'Balco', the company heralded its presence in and outside the State.

If the production capacity was 12 tons per month in 1991, the company now produces 200 tons in that place. BSNL, Public Works Department, Indian Railways, Kerala Water Authority, Kerala State Housing Board etc meet their need for PVC pipes from Balco.

The success of wiring pipes led the ISO 2002-certified company to expand into the water pipe production. In 2004, the facilities were again modernised to include German machines capable of producing 2 types of pipes at the same time.

An executive member of Laghu Bharati, a national association of small scale industries, Sudheer Kumar is the General Secretary of All Kerala Small Scale PVC Pipe Manufacturers Association.

Bindu, a high school teacher at Parakkod is his wife. Aravind and Sankar are their children.
