GEETHA LAKSHMI: STARTING A SCHOOL FOR DYSLEXIC CHILDREN | |||||||
|
Pratheeksha,
a school for dyslexia children, was started by Geetha Lakshmi 2 years ago
with just one child. And this first student was Adarsh, son of a family
friend and a 2nd standard student, who used to come to her house
regularly. He was sent there by his mother as Geetha was a qualified
teacher for special children, having completed a training programme from
Madras Dyslexia Association.
Without giving any publicity, the school attracted the attention of anxious parents. Now there are 10 students in the school, of which 6 are dyslexic. To help these children, there are 6 teachers, who are well qualified and experienced special educators. "The teachers have to be creative. All the teachers that we have are service-minded. They are not working for money. It is purely a service rendered by them," says Geetha. Dyslexia is a subtle learning disability where the child could give all the answers orally, but fail miserably in written exam. Such a child is one who reads 'saw' as 'was', one who has difficulty in differentiating the sound of 'p' and 'b' or 't' and 'd', one who draws well but has a poor handwriting and one whose spellings are bizarre. Geetha and her team have formulated special texts to simplify learning. They teach the children phonetics and employ visual teaching aids to help them learn. Reading exercises are also given and the school functions between 9.30am and 2 pm. "In the long run, we would like to see this school as an institution exclusively for dyslexic children," she says.
