By utilizing rain water for its daily needs at the rate of 30000 liters per day, for 135 days in a year, the BTH Sarovaram Hotel is showing the way for other large enterprises in Kochi on how to go about meeting their water needs.

A 5-million-liter storage tank, constructed in ¾-acre land in the 5-acre hotel complex 6 years ago, forms the key unit of the system.  And within 2 years of its commissioning, the hotel has already recouped the Rs.15 lakh invested in the system.  The tank has been constructed with due care for the quality of water.  After excavating to a depth of 7 feet, geotextile made of jute and High Density Poly Ethylene was spread on the floor.  On the top of this an 8-inch layer of clay was laid, thus effectively preventing intrusion of saline water from the neighbouring lake.

In addition to canalizing the water falling on the roof of the hotel through pipeline to the storage tank, the water falling in the compound is collected in 4 ferro-cement tanks and pumped into the reservoir.

An enclosure adjacent to the hotel building is used for growing fish, which eat up the mosquito larvae and algae, thus providing peace of mind to the visitors at night.  Of the 30000 liters of water that the hotel uses daily, 20000 is generated as wastewater.  This is recycled and used for gardening.

Major enterprises like Kochi Refinery or Port or Shipyard could think of such comprehensive schemes, which can reduce the acute water problem in the city considerably.
