Thanks to the efforts of the National Service Scheme (NSS) volunteers of Devamatha College, Kuravilangad, the 4-decades old dumping pit in the campus has been converted into a 5-lakh litre storage capacity rain water reservoir.

The ditch formed by quarrying rubble for the construction of the college in 1964, had since then been used as a waste pit.  But Dr.T.T.Michael, Programme Officer had an idea to convert it into more productive use of storing precious rain water.  When the Principal and students gave the green signal, the dream became a reality.

As part of their 10-day camp, the NSS volunteers, former volunteers and even members of the faculty pitched in with their effort to convert the pit.  In addition to the natural spring in the old quarry, the water in the reservoir is proposed to be replenished with the rain water falling on the nearby Commerce Block of the college.

As part of the camp, the students constructed 4 ferro-cement tanks for storing rain water.  Again, thanks to the efforts of the students, a vermin-compost unit too has been made functional in the campus.  The students constructed 1200 rain water ditches in their adopted villages of Pakalomattam, Ilaikkad, Kaliyar Thottam and Kanjiramkulam.  The villagers and self-help groups were actively involved in the voluntary effort by the students.
