HEALTH CARE INSTITUTE: PROVIDING FREE CANCER DETECTION AND TREATMENT | |||||||
|
Not
as a philanthropic effort, but as a human right intervention do the
volunteers at Health Care Institute view their regular camps for
detection and treatment of cancer. Joy,
Karim, Biju, Maheen, Sasi, Devassi and a few others were already
helping the sick and needy on their own when they got together and
thought: wouldn’t it be better to pool their efforts? And so was born the Institute on May 17, 1998 by organising a
cancer detection camp. If
initially 25 persons contributed Rs.2500 each to start the venture, more
and more benefactors, especially doctors, came to the scene as years
rolled by. The
Institute works in tandem with the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC),
Thiruvananthapuram and Pain and Palliative
Clinic, Kozhikode. So far it
has organized 17 camps in which 5030 persons were tested for the dreaded
disease. Of the 67 cases of
cancer detected, almost 60 per cent could get cured after treatment at RCC. In
addition, the Institute organizes awareness camps as well as trainings for
new volunteers. According to
the doctors of RCC, there are not many charitable institutions that
organize camps with the regularity shown by the Health Care Institute. Clinics
are organized every Wednesday and Saturday and more than 400 patients
depend on the Institute for their treatment.
While the cost of medicine alone comes to Rs.15000, the total
expenses come to Rs.40000 per month.
With no funding by the Government or other donor agencies, the
Institue fulfils its destiny, thanks to the large heartedness of a few
doctors. Whether
the patient is rich or poor, all the examinations and medicines at the
Institute are provided free of charge.
In addition to concern for physical health, the Institute tries to
take care of mental, social and spiritual dimentions of the patients by
visiting the houses of patients who cannot come to the clinic.
