For the last 8 years, successful and sustainable rain water harvesting has been going on in the coastal village of Chellanam in Ernakulam District.  And the initiative and leadership for the change had been given by Social Service Society under Alappuzha Diocese with cooperation from Carithas India.

What started in Chellanam has now spread to other neighbouring villages and so far about 350 rain water storage structures have been constructed.  In Chellanam alone, 60 such tanks were constructed while 40 more are in the pipeline.  Add to that the 40 tanks constructed by Win Centre, an organization led by Sister Alice, and one gets a clearer picture of the pioneering effort of the people of the area.

The 2.4m diameter and 1.4 m high tanks with sieve at inlet, can store 5000 litres of water.  The beneficiary of the scheme has to pay only 30% of the Rs.10000 Ferro cement tank.
