8 ordinary words – uneasy lies the head that wears the crown - in the hands of Shakespeare transform themselves into a line of poetic beauty.  Similarly, half a dozen old discarded items from waste store is all that is required by Sreedharan of Karimbiliyancode, Madirassery, Malappuram to produce a film projector.  These include rib of umbrellas, parts of bicycle, brass plate, wooden pieces etc.  Even the ‘film’ used in the projector has been designed by him from plastic sheets.

Sreedharan is 7th standard drop out.  A goldsmith by profession, he has been an innovator right from the days after joining his father as an apprentice.  If he began his innovative efforts by designing the tools needed for his profession, he soon made a successful attempt at fabricating a silver head for an antique record player that came into his possession.  He has a collection of 600 rare records also.

The moulding and fabrication of the projector were done by Sreedharan all by himself.  When the theatres refused to lend him film, he innovated by creating cartoon film by drawing on plastic sheets.  Even the pen for this purpose was fabricated by him. Using the wall on his room as screen, he has shown his movie to friends and relatives many times.  And all the shows were ‘houseful’ with curious viewers.

Since it is costly, the motor for running the projector has been discarded with.  Instead, the device is hand-driven.  He is now working on improving the sound system of the device.

Sreedharan does goldsmith’s work along with his brother Uday at home.  Beena is his wife and Sreerag is his son.
