JOY CHEMMACHEL: CONTRIBUTION TO CONSTRUCT HOUSES FOR 52 | |||||||
|
That Chicago-based businessman cum TV-film star Joy Chemmachel had decided to make a major contribution towards construction of 52 houses for the poor in Neendoor and Kaduthuruthy Panchayat was a commendable gesture. But thanks for inculcating the spirit of philanthropy in him should perhaps go to his mother Alley, who used to set apart a portion of the family food for the poor everyday. And young Joy, 6th among her 10 children, was often deputed to distribute his mother’s offering to the hungry recipients. Thus when he decided to construct his new house at Neendoor, he resolved to construct at least some houses for poor people in the area. With the Neendoor Panchayat joining hands with him, the blueprint for service started turning into a brick and mortar solution. Thus 42 houses in Neendoor and 10 houses in Kaduthuruthy were constructed at a total cost of more than Rs.18 lakhs. Joy’s contribution was more than ⅔ of this cost. Joy, who reached US in the middle of 80s, had been active in the Malayali associations, though he of late he has been devoting more time for philanthropic efforts. A noted actor, he is the chairman of North American Malayalam Movie and Mini Screen Artists’ Link. Shyla from Kidangoor is his wife. Their 4 children are Lucas, Geo, Alley and Merry.
