ANNAMMA: BRINGING UP 16 DESTITUTE CHILDREN | |||||||
|
Her dream during young days was to become a nun. Though destiny did not fulfill that dream, Annamma is now more than satisfied with bringing up 16 destitute children in the S.O.S Village at Choondi, near Aluva. At the village there are 15 houses for destitutes, each under the care of a designated mother who looks after 10 children. Annamma is one of the 15 ‘mothers’ at the village. Her dream of becoming a nun was put in cold storage after she dropped out in 8th standard. Though she later worked in Amma magazine in Angamaly and lived with nuns for 7 years and later worked in Satya Deepam, a spiritual magazine, her next stage in life was to look after her aged father for 10 years. After the death of her father, she again thought of joining some convent. It was at this stage that she heard about the S.O.S Village. Initially she doubted whether she would be able to bring up even one child. But during the last 16 years, she had been lucky enough to bring up 16 children. One of her children was married and 3 boys got jobs. “It gives her enormous joy when these youngsters come once in a while to meet her.” 4 of her 16 children came to her when they were less than 1 year old. “When the children come from school with good marks, or with prizes won at competitions, then my heart overflows with love,” says Annamma,
