Simple things are not so simple, just as common sense is not very common. Or else every one else could have discovered the remedy for mite (mandari) and bud rot that Lukose Kadalikkattil developed to save his coconuts.
His simple organic solution has been approved by the M.S.Swaminathan Foundation and has received the fellowship of the National Agricultural Technology Project. The ingredients of the ingenious medicine are common salt and ash. In the case of bud rot, a 3rd ingredient, namely indigo, too is added.
Into the saturated salt solution ash is added till the mix is like a paste. This when applied to the coconut buds prevent the attack of mite. Even those coconuts affected by the disease will recover if the medicine is applied in the initial stage.
In the case of bud rot, the preparation of the solution is like this. A handful each of salt and ash are mixed using sufficient water to form a paste. To this is added 20 gm of indigo. The coconut tree is prepared for applying the solution by cutting off the affected portion. The paste is then applied to the cut off portion and covered with a mud pot.
What is the proof of the efficacy of this method of treatment? The recovery of all his 210 coconut trees severely affected with mite is the proof of the pudding.
