RASIMAN: SCHOOL BOY WINS PRIZE IN READING | |||||||
|
Is reading becoming old fashioned in the era of video games and internet chatting? Whatever others may think, 14-year-old Rasiman devotes a considerable part of his spare time to read on a wide variety of topics from classics of literature to works of science. Though it is only during the last 4 years that he has taken up reading as a serious habit, already many honours have come his way. The latest was the 1st prize in the All Kerala Reading Competition for school students, conducted by the Library Council. 60% of the questions of the competition were based on a selected list of 10 books, which the participants were asked to read. The balance 40% was based on general knowledge. Rasiman managed to collect most of these 10 books from his school library. And the person who has been encouraging his reading habit by providing necessary help has been Fr. Jose Kadukkunnel, his Headmaster at Silver Hills High School, Kozhikode. To the question why he is such a voracious reader, Rasiman has a clear answer. “Each book depicts the social environment of its time. By the right reading, one could imbibe the right in them and reject the wrong notions,” he says. Last year he won the 2nd prize in the State Balarama Digest scholarship exam. Earlier he won the 5th position at the national level in National Science Talent Search Exam, 2nd place in State Science Quiz and 1st prize in State Mathematics Quiz. Rasiman’s father Dr.T.V.Sulaiman is lecturer in Pharmacology at Medical College and mother, Raziabi is a Hindi teacher in Medical College Campus High School, Kozhikode.
