As a sign of tolerance of plurality and religious amity, it could be another instance of Muslim-Hindu appreciation of each other’s symbols.  During last Vijayadasami, a mosque became the venue of ‘Vidyarambham’ when the priests of the Cheraman Juma Masjid, the oldest mosque in India, initiated 6 children into the world of letters.

With the words,”read, in the name of the Lord, thy creator’, the clergy helped the 6 to scribble the first letters.   They were made to recite and then write the first letter of Malayalam followed by ‘Allah’.  The 6 who went through the rite were Rishikesh, son of Babu of Arakkulam, the twins, Amrutha and Aiswarya, daughters of Sunil Dutt of Moothakunnam, Vishnu, son of Haridas of Chettuva, Anupama, daughter of Vinod Kumar of Perumbavoor and Fahad, son of Muhammed Basheer of Koloth House, Perumbavoor.

The function was held at 7am under the leadership of Imam Abdul Jaleel Moulavi and Nazaruddin Bakhavi.

It all started in 2001 when the mosque allowed itself to be the venue and sponsor for such a function for the first time.  In 2001 and 2002, 1 child each was brought for the rite.
