Way back in the beginning of 1950s, E.N.Rama Varma, of Varma’s Ayurvedic Pharmacy, Alappuzha, treated a woman for diabetics.  After 10 days of experimental treatment, the woman was completely cured.  He publicized the details of the ‘Kashaya’, its preparation and ingredients in the newspapers of the day.  A rich man of Kollam, Thangal Kunju Musaliar, was cured of diabetics by this treatment.  He was so grateful that he arranged a ceremonial welcome to the doctor at Kollam and lovingly presented him with Rs.500, a large sum at that time.

That was the beginning of the tablet ‘Salopsi’ being manufactured by the Pharmacy.  If initially he and his wife used to make the tablets by hand, later they obtained a hand-operated machine before finally switching over to automatic machine recently.

A man with a family tradition of Ayurveda, Varma came fully into the fold of the ancient medicine at the age of 17.  His uncle was his guru, who brought him to Alappuzha.  Today, his daughter too is an Ayurveda doctor in her own right, who treats mostly woman patients who come to the Pharmacy.

There is no secrecy about any of the medicines prepared by him.  He has supplied effective medicines for Asthma and rheumatism as well as cancer.  In memory of his son, he does not charge any amount for treatment of cancer,.  Cure for cataract without surgery, a cure within 3 months for piles etc are techniques he has learned from his father.

The king of Travancore honoured him with the shield of conch for curing him of eye ailment.

He sums up his magical touch with medicines thus: when some patients sit in front of me, the Lord prompts something in my mind.  They follow the regimen and cure is affected.
