15 years ago, when Information Technology was just making its entry into Kerala, a woman started a consultancy firm with just one computer. Today that company started by her produces the world’s leading software solution for the plantation sector – ‘Harvest IT’.

This commendable achievement has been the effort of Achamma Joseph, Managing Director of Soft Systems Private Limited, Kochi.  The clients of her software include giants multinationals in plantation sector like Uni-Lever and James Finley.  On the other side, her effort has been recognized by software giant Microsoft.

Her product was adjudged the best software solution from among 856 companies from 76 nations.  Even before that, her firm was the first start up to win the logo of Microsoft Back Office in India.

“From planting stage to the marketing stage, the software covers the entire gamut of operations in the plantations field.  Such a comprehensive package is not available anywhere else.  And that is the secret of our success,” she says.  Periodic changes in features help the product to maintain its number one status.

She spends more than a fortnight on tours inside and outside India every month, and uses that opportunity to find more business and to keep the existing client-base intact.

Achamma, who belongs to Kozhenchery, is a postgraduate in Chemistry.  She had learned computer programming from NIIT, Mumbai and worked for a while at Hindustan Computers before venturing on her own.

Her husband V.K.Joseph, resigned from merchant navy to give her support as Executive Director of the firm.  They have 2 children: Kavya and Vinay.
