She is into a field where even men tread cautiously. Jaya Palakkunnel, who runs the Bharat Engineering Company at Kochi, is in the business of removing the hard chemical deposits of boilers, heat exchangers, turbines etc using high pressure jets of water that can even pierce through walls.
Small wonder there is no competition for her firm in Kerala even 10 years after she first ventured into the field. Hydro blasting requires very skilled workmanship and even a small deviation in the direction of jet can cause mishaps. Total concentration and full cooperation of the workers are essential for this risky job.
Jaya’s days are busy with work at big factories like Kochi Refineries Limited, Thermal Power Plant, Kayamkulam, FACT etc. Once the plant closes for maintenance work, her days of hectic activities begin. Working 24 hours a day, her company of 20 odd workers completes the task in scheduled time.
Never lose confidence even in the gravest of situations, is her motto. She recounts the experience of having to leave her infant at home and travel through 100 km of desert land at night to give instructions to her workers from outside the gate of Kota Atomic Power Plant, Rajastan.
Jaya did her M.Com followed by Diplomas in Personal Management and Industrial Relations as well as Transactional Analysis. After working in various organizations, she started her own company in 1991.Her family consists of husband Rajan Paul (Rajagopal) and daughters Jyothi and Priya.
