77-year-old Krishna Pillai does not know the age of the Chittattinkara Vaidya Sala.  He only knows that his father and grandfather were ayurveda doctors like him.  “From the accounts of incidents, the ayurveda tradition of the family started 500 years ago”, he says.

The Vaidya Sala is in a thatched hut at Kesavadasapuram, Thiruvananthapuram.  Here, sitting behind an old table, Krishna Pillai prescribes medicines for patients after diagnosing their troubles by observing their eyes and pulse.  Just as the patients have reposed faith in him, well-known and world famous allopathic doctors too come to him.   These doctors from USA, UK and Japan are interested in the possible cure for heart diseases and cancer in ayurveda.

His father and grandfather traveled throughout the land in connection with treatment.  For them, treatment was a penance rather than for living.  Many have found solace in the hands of Krishna Pillai.  However, not many are aware of this silent contract between the doctor and the patient, he says and laughs in a self-effacing manner.

There is effective treatment in ayurveda for diseases ranging from migraine to blood cancer.  Ayurveda is a science and it has to be handled scientifically, he says.  That is why, to keep the 500-year-old tradition alive, he goes about silently with his work.
