KOTTARAM GEORGE: BEACON FOR THOSE TEMPTED TO COMMIT SUICIDE | |||||||
|
It takes more courage to live than to commit suicide, says Kottaram George. He must surely know, for before becoming a practical evangelist of anti-suicide message, George had attempted to end life, not once but thrice. His is a story of how riches often crumble like a pack of cards. George, who belongs to Kottiyoor in Kannur had in his heydays 6 shops, 5 buses, partnership in another 6 shops etc. Suddenly, all ventures started making losses. Even the palatial house had to be sold off and the daily existence itself was a struggle. It was then that he ran off from home. His attempt to end life at Thalasseri and Kozhikode could not materialize as his neighbours in the lodges at both places committed suicide when he was there. The 3rd attempt was at a lodge in Ernakulam. At midnight he was informed that a man had committed suicide in his room the previous night. In the wake of these experiences, George decided to bid goodbye to suicide. He attempted to approach the problem with the assistance of voluntary organizations. It resulted in his travel through 600 panchayats of the state and 2 books: one on the cutthroat money lending practices and the other on suicide. He later came back home, spoke to the money lenders and settled with family at Nirmalagiri, Koothuparambu. Today George is a busy man whom many desperate persons seek day and night: people sinking in the loan vortex, those with AIDS etc. His ventures like marriage bureau for HIV positives, special school for their children have drawn much attention. George’s practical assistance is available to anyone in the range of 700 km from Kozhikode, his present centre of activities. Practical help and not counseling or advice is what a desperate man needs, repeats George.
