In 1996, long before Internet had become a household name in Kerala, a women returnee from USA had set up shop at Kochi and offered the services of the new medium to prospective clients.  Despite bleak days of struggle during initial days, today, 7 years down the lane, Jolly Chirayil’s firm, Chirayil Infotech Private Limited has a turnover of Rs.82 lakhs and a client base of 250 including multi nationals like Johnson and Johnson.

In addition to web design, the company provides services in the field software, multimedia, advertising and e-commerce. A dedicated server established in US, user-friendly method for even novice to upload content to the website, quite simple to operate multimedia CDs, these contribute to the growing number of her satisfied customers.

Jolly obtained post graduation in underwater acoustics from Cochin University in the later 1970s and joined N.P.O.L as a scientist.  She later went to USA and joined AT&Tm as a scientist after completing her Ph.D in computer science there.  Her husband too had worked as a scientist in the same company.  It was their desire to expose the children to the culture of India that prompted them to return to India after relinquishing their lucrative professional careers there.

Jolly who does not like to be given any concession as a women in professional life, would come to the office at 2 o’clock at night if the situation demands it.  “A woman entrepreneur should be able to discuss things with an open approach instead of withdrawing into oneself”, she reminds would be self starters.

Her husband is the technical director of the company.  She is quick to point out how much the support of her husband and 2 children, Deepu and Smitha contribute to her strength.
