It could as well be displayed in the drawing room than being used as a waste bin to generate vermi-compost in the kitchen.  The cute terracotta vermi-tanks being marketed by the Welfare Services Society, Ernakulam can be kept close to the kitchen without fear of foul smell or other health hazards.

The purpose of the tank is two-fold.  While it provides a means for the owner to dispose off the kitchen waste, it acts as a production unit of vermi-compost and vermi-wash, which are dear to organic farmers.

With 100 earthworms and a little cowdung and dry leaves, one could start production in the tank.  A layer of leaves is placed in the tank, followed by cowdung and the worms.  Adding a little vermin-compost would be better.  Later the tank is closed and the waste from kitchen is added to it from the next day onwards.  Everyday, the mixture is kept wet till the tank is filled.  It is then kept aside for 40 days in moist condition.

The vermi-wash that oozes out through the tap provided at the bottom can be collected in bottles.  After 10 more days, the compost is ready to be taken out.

The Society, under the leadership of Fr.Paul Munjely markets the terracotta tanks.  One unit, together with the earthworms, costs Rs.400.
