The noise of the bus stand or the revving of the engines do not affect the 7 tailors in ‘Topman’ at Vengara in the least.  For all of them are deaf and dumb.  For the last 2 years they have been running the unit to the appreciation of the local population.

It was sheer coincidence that brought the 6 to the land of Usuf, their 7th member.  And it is under his ownership that the unit is now functioning.

B.S.Santhosh from Agali, Palakkad, P.Jaleel from Munduparambil, Malappuram, C.M.Abdul Azeez of Payyanedath, Palakkad, A.K.Muhammed Ashraf from Mattil Bazaar, N.K.Ashraf from Puthanangadi, Valiyora and K.Dinesh are the other tailors.  They all had studied in schools for deaf and dumb at Kozhikkode, Kolappuram, Ottappalam and Thiruvananthapuram.  During their school days itself they had learned tailoring.

Though they cannot converse, the tailors can write Malayalam and English quite well.  “Good attitude and good work,” that is the opinion about the 7 in the area.

During holidays other deaf and dumb friends come to the shop and then it becomes a heaven of silence.

For communicating with the customers, they have engaged 2 helpers: C.Vasu of Oorakam and Shamsudeen of Kannamangalam, both of whom are non-stop speakers!
