In the Lilliputian world of Nano Physics, Sakthi Kumar is a giant at large.  This young scientist from Kottayam, now doing research at the Toyo University in Japan has already made discoveries that could have important consequences in the medical field.

Polymers, in the plasma state, display more strength.  Sakthi Kumar has succeeded in creating a plasma polymer using glucose, an organic substance.  The implication is that devices like pace maker, heart valves and muscle rods can be made using the organic plasma polymers.  They will not only be strong but will overcome the tendency of the body to reject artificial devices.  His work, perhaps the first in the world in this field, had much appreciation at the international conference on plasma polymers held in Germany in January 2002.

Another area where his research could have application is in the treatment of cancer.  A nano drop of medicine covered with organic plasma polymer can hunt the cancerous cells more like a miniature guided missile and destroy it without side effects.  This can lead to the elimination of cancer rather than its containment.  Sakthi Kumar has already initiated steps to patent this work.

Son of P.Dasappan Nair and late T.D.Radhamany Amma, Sakthi Bhavan, Thirunakkara, Kottayam, he did his graduation and post graduation in Physics from C.M.S.College, Kottayam.  Later he did his Ph.D at the George Sudarsan Centre for Physics and Computer Sciences, at the same college. He then joined IIT, Delhi as a research fellow.  It was during this time that he was selected as one of the 5 recipients of the Rs. 42 lakhs fellowship offered by the Japan Society for Promotion of Science.  After completing the fellowship he is continuing as a scientist in the same University.

Neena is his wife and 1½-year-old Ankit, their son.
